Meet Dr. April Day: Supporting Women Over 40 Through Hormonal Transitions, Gut Health & Whole Person Healing
By Teresa Howes | Twine Featured Founder Interview
Dr. April Day didn’t set out to work in medicine. In fact, growing up around the intense realities of psychiatric care and home health nursing, she was sure she wouldn’t. But after years of chronic symptoms, frustrating appointments, and no real answers, a chance encounter with a naturopathic doctor changed everything — not just her health, but her life trajectory.
Now, as a naturopathic doctor herself, Dr. Day helps women over 40 move through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond with holistic, personalized care.
“Not only did she change my health — she changed my life. I left a relationship, made new friends, got new jobs. Everything changed.”
A Winding Path That Led to Purpose
April’s journey to becoming a naturopathic doctor was anything but linear. She worked in restaurants, nonprofits, and social services before deciding to go back to medical school at 36. After struggling with unexplained symptoms — hives, depression, weight gain, and more — and getting nowhere with conventional medicine, she found healing through naturopathic care. That healing sparked a calling.
“I took one class — Chemistry 101 — just to see if I could do it. And I kept going. Eventually, I enrolled in Bastyr and graduated in my 40s.”
From Practice Owner to a Healthier Path
After graduating, Dr. Day took a bold leap and used her life savings to purchase a naturopathic clinic. But just as she was getting started, the pandemic hit. Between high overhead, shifting client dynamics, and the stress of running the business solo, she made the courageous decision to close the clinic and refocus on her true passion: patient care.
“I wasn’t helping my patients because I was trying to save the business. And I wasn’t saving the business because I wanted to help my patients. Closing the clinic was heartbreaking… but it was also the right call.”
Now, Dr. Day splits her time between Concept Wellness in Pacific Beach and Naturopathic RX in Rancho Santa Fe, where she enjoys the support of an interdisciplinary team and the freedom to focus fully on individualized care.
Her Practice Today: Women Over 40, Holistic Focus
Dr. Day’s current focus is supporting women through hormonal changes with an integrated, root-cause approach. That often includes hormone therapy, gut health, thyroid testing, and lifestyle changes — but always customized to each woman’s needs.
“We start with lab work to look under the hood. Then we layer in treatment step by step — we don’t build Rome in a day. That helps make care more accessible and less overwhelming.”
The Power of Starting Over — and Trusting Your Gut
While she now thrives in her clinical environments, Dr. Day is candid about the challenges of entrepreneurship and the emotional toll of closing a business. Her twin sister — a massage therapist and soon-to-be counselor — has been her biggest source of support throughout.
“If I had one piece of advice to give my younger self, it’s this: trust your gut. Every time I’ve ignored that little voice, I’ve regretted it.”
What’s Next — and How Twine Can Help
Dr. Day continues to build her practice by focusing on the unique needs of women 40+, and she’s passionate about creating safe spaces for education and community connection. She hosts “living room lectures” — casual, empowering gatherings where women can learn, connect, and feel seen.
“Women say, ‘I had no idea this was part of perimenopause!’ They leave feeling informed, validated, and less alone.”
Dr. Day welcomes the opportunity to bring these events into the Twine community — especially as more women seek answers, connection, and relief.
